Revitalizing Rural Economy: Amul Dairy Plant Inaugurated in Eastern Uttar Pradesh

The flow of milk from Kashi (Varanasi) is set to create employment opportunities in approximately 1346 villages of Purvanchal. The project is expected to indirectly provide employment to over one lakh individuals. At the end of each year, dairy producers will also receive a percentage of the company’s profits.

The renowned city of Banaras (Varanasi) will witness the establishment of Banas Dairy, renowned for its high-quality dairy products including yogurt and paneer. The inauguration of Banas Kashi Sankul by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 23 marks a milestone in the implementation of the Prime Minister’s vision, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath overseeing the project’s progress.

During his two-day visit to Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Banas Dairy, the largest plant of Amul, on February 23. Nearly one lakh individuals will benefit indirectly from the project. The inception of this project is expected to double the income of farmers and cattle rearers in Purvanchal. Dairy producers will also receive a percentage of the company’s profits at the end of each year. People in Purvanchal will enjoy a variety of dairy products including sweets, ice cream, paneer, khoya, ghee, along with Banaras’ special Langda and Lal peda.

The foundation stone of this plant, constructed at a cost of 622 crores, was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 23, 2021. Banas Dairy is built over 30 acres in the Amul Industrial Area, Agro Park.

Expansion of Dairy Infrastructure:

To facilitate milk collection, the company will establish milk chilling centers in every village. The flow of milk from Kashi is expected to generate employment in approximately 1346 villages of Purvanchal. This will indirectly benefit nearly one lakh people. The project will provide direct employment to approximately 750 individuals in the factory and around 2,350 individuals in the field. The Chairman of Amul Banas Kashi Sankul Project, Shankar Bhai Chaudhary, highlighted the modern technology incorporated into the plant, ensuring its self-sufficiency.

Additionally, five chilling centers have already been set up within a radius of 5 to 50 kilometers for milk collection. A total of 13 chilling centers will be established in Purvanchal. Each village will have a milk collection center, operated by a dairy procurement committee, which will purchase milk following standard operating procedures. Milk collection will be done by the company’s vehicles at designated times.

Benefits to Farmers:

Currently, farmers from five districts—Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, and Sant Ravidas Nagar—are benefiting from the project. In the future, farmers and cattle rearers from additional districts including Jaunpur, Azamgarh, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Ambedkar Nagar, Ballia, Mau, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Gorakhpur will also reap the benefits.

The plant will utilize natural resources efficiently, with a capacity of 4 ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) units for water reuse, housekeeping, gardening, and boilers. Additionally, a 1-megawatt capacity solar plant has been installed.

Quality Assurance and Capacity:

The company plans to introduce artificial insemination for superior breed animals in the future to increase milk production. High-quality animal feed will also be provided to dairy producers. The dairy plant’s processing capacity is currently 1 million liters per day, expandable to 1.5 million liters per day.

Capacity of Banas Dairy Amul Plant:

  • Liquid Milk Processing: 8 LLPD (Lakh Liters Per Day)
  • Pouched Milk Packing Capacity: 5 LLPD
  • Butter Production Capacity: 75 KLPD (Kilo Liters Per Day)
