Puducherry, The Central government has given approval for the construction of a new building for the Puducherry legislative assembly.
Official sources said, the Centre has agreed to allocate Rs.200 crore during the current financial year and Rs.100 crore in the next fiscal towards the construction of the new legislative assembly building.
It may be noted that the Puducherry legislative assembly is functioning in a building constructed by the French and the Secretariat in another building on the beach road.
There was a demand for the construction of an integrated assembly complex accommodating the Chief Secretariat too at a cost of Rs.310 crore.
Assembly Speaker R Selvam earlier met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman and submitted a letter from Chief Minister N Rangaswamy seeking financial support and also Lok Sabha Seaker Om Birla.
A government land at Thattanchavady here was identified for the new buiding and it was apprised to the Centre, following which the approval was received.
