Coldest night in Srinagar this season as mercury plummets

Srinagar, Srinagar experienced season’s coldest night while Pahalgam temperatures dropped further in the Kashmir Valley where mercury plunged to sub zero degrees as cold breeze coupled with thick fog added to people’s woe.

Visibility on Tuesday morning was very low vehicles on Srinagar roads plied with their headlights on. 

A Meteorological Department Official said, temperature plunged in Srinagar to seasons lowest so far at minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.

Tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.7 degrees Celsius against the minus 4 degrees recorded a day ago. Reports from the Pahalgam said that small water bodies in the resorts have frozen up.

The forecast for the Kashmir valley till November 19 is “likely dry”. Western Disturbances are likely to hit the north side of the valley and may cause snow or rain on the upper reaches on November 19 on wards for a couple of days, the MeT office said.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded a minimum temperature at minus 1.8 degrees Celsius against the minus 1.2 degrees Celsius a day ago. Similarly at Kokernag it was 0.2 degrees Celsius against the 0.4 degrees Celsius recorded the previous day, showing a bit improvement.

The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir also showed improvement in night temperatures where it was minus 1.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday against minus 1.6 degrees on Monday. There were also thick fog reported.


At Kupwara in frontier Kashmir district it was minus 2.3 degrees Celsius against minus 1.6 degrees recorded a day ago showing a further dip in the night temperature, the MeT office said.
