Raipur, Vishnu Deo Sai, a prominent tribal leader, has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. The decision, which came after a week-long suspense, reflects the party’s trust in his leadership capabilities. With a rich political background and a strong connection to the tribal communities, Vishnu Deo Sai is poised to take charge of the state’s leadership. This article provides an overview of the 59-year-old leader’s life, political journey, and the factors that contributed to his selection.
Vishnu Deo Sai’s journey in politics began in his native village of Bagia, where he served as the Sarpanch. Born on February 21, 1964, in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district, he completed his higher secondary education at Loyola Higher Secondary School in Kunkuri, Jashpur. Before venturing into politics, Sai was engaged in agriculture.
His political career gained momentum with his election to the Madhya Pradesh assembly, where he served from 1990 to 1998, predating the formation of Chhattisgarh as a separate state. Subsequently, he transitioned to national politics and represented the Raigarh constituency in the Lok Sabha from 1999 to 2014.
Notably, Vishnu Deo Sai served as the Chhattisgarh BJP president on three occasions—first from 2006 to 2010, then briefly in 2014, and later from 2020 to 2022. His leadership roles extended to the national stage, where he held the position of Union Minister of State for Steel, Mines, and Labour and Employment from 2014 to 2019 under the first Narendra Modi-led Cabinet.
In the recent Chhattisgarh assembly polls, Vishnu Deo Sai contested from the Kunkuri constituency and secured a resounding victory by defeating his Congress opponent UD Minj by a margin of 25,541 votes. This triumph, coupled with the BJP’s overall success, played a pivotal role in dislodging the Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government.
Vishnu Deo Sai’s appointment as Chief Minister is significant in the context of tribal representation. Belonging to the Kanwar tribe, designated as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) in Chhattisgarh, he brings to the forefront the issues and aspirations of tribal communities. His deep connection with the tribal populace is reflected in the BJP’s strong performance in tribal-dominated areas, winning 17 of the 29 ST constituencies.
Outside the realm of politics, Vishnu Deo Sai enjoys playing badminton and football, indicating a well-rounded personality. His involvement in social service underscores his commitment to community welfare.
As Vishnu Deo Sai prepares to assume the role of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister, his journey from a village Sarpanch to a national political figure marks a testament to his leadership acumen. With a focus on tribal representation and a track record of political achievements, Sai is poised to guide Chhattisgarh through its next phase of development. The coming years will reveal how his leadership shapes the state and addresses the diverse needs of its people, particularly those from tribal communities.
