Mumbai, EW News: Ram Karan Yadav has taken charge as the new General Manager of Central Railway, effective December 1, 2023. A senior officer of the Indian Railways Service of Engineers (IRSE) belonging to the 1986 exam batch, Yadav brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to his new role.
Prior to his appointment as General Manager, Central Railway, Yadav served as the Director General of the Indian Railways Institute Of Civil Engineering (IRICEN) in Pune. He takes over from Naresh Lalwani and is expected to lead the Central Railway with his vast knowledge and experience in railway infrastructure projects.
Yadav holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with Honors from IIT Roorkee (1985) and a Master’s degree in Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering from IIT Delhi (1987). With a career spanning over three decades, he joined the Railways in March 1988 and has held various significant positions across different zones and departments.
During his tenure as Director General, IRICEN, Pune, Yadav played a crucial role in organizing and planning training programs for civil engineering officers. He was also involved in the preparation of question papers for promotions to Group B and the revision of codes and manuals of civil engineering.
His remarkable achievements include serving as Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) on Western Railway, where the highest-ever commissioning of new lines, gauge conversion, and doubling on WR in a year was accomplished. Similarly, as Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) on North Eastern Railway, Yadav successfully commissioned significant railway electrification, doubling with electrification, and gauge conversion projects.
In addition to his contributions to railway infrastructure, Yadav has demonstrated leadership in various roles, such as Divisional Railway Manager in Bhusawal, where he led a team of over 17,000 staff. His focus on infrastructure improvement and a mission to remove encroachments from Railway land resulted in the reclamation of over 120 acres of precious land.
Yadav’s diverse experience also includes heading the Property Business Department of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), where he significantly increased the total earnings of the Property Business Cell. His tenure as Chief Engineer (Construction) on Eastern Railway and GM/Urban Transport/RITES Mumbai further showcased his expertise in executing new line and doubling works and conducting feasibility studies for elevated corridors.
Recognized for his outstanding contributions, Yadav received the Leadership & Performance Excellence award from the Minister of Railways in March 2019. His educational pursuits include attending executive leadership programs at prestigious institutions such as SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan, Italy, INSEAD in Singapore, and ICLIF in Malaysia.
As the new General Manager of Central Railway, Ram Karan Yadav is expected to bring his extensive experience and leadership skills to further enhance the efficiency and development of one of the vital railway zones in the country.
