New Delhi : Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led government, accusing it of attempting to stifle the voices of farmers who are demanding justice. In a statement posted on his social media handle, Kharge asserted, “To quell the farmers’ protests, the government has resorted to draconian measures, including barbed wires, tear gas, drones, nails, and firearms.”
Highlighting the Modi government’s failure to fulfill its promises to farmers over the past decade, Kharge lamented the broken pledges of doubling farmers’ income by 2022, ensuring a 50 per cent increase in Minimum Support Price (MSP), and providing a legal guarantee for MSP. He emphasized that the time has come for the 62 crore farmers of the nation to unite and raise their voices against the authoritarian policies of the Modi government.
Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala echoed Kharge’s sentiments, lambasting the government for its inaction despite withdrawing the contentious farm laws on July 18, 2022. Surjewala questioned why the government has failed to fulfill its promise of enacting a law to guarantee MSP, prompting farmers to demand accountability for the unkept promises.
Surjewala warned that history would remember the Modi government’s tenure as a period marked by cruelty, repression, and oppression against farmers. He reiterated the resolve of farmers to script their destiny and secure victory in their battle for MSP on the path they tread.
The statements from Kharge and Surjewala underscore growing discontent and frustration among farmers over the government’s handling of agrarian issues, setting the stage for intensified protests and demands for justice in the days to come.
