Justice SB Sinha Memorial Lecture at NUSRL Ranchi Highlights Constitutional Case

Ranchi, EW Correspondent:  The National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, recently hosted the Justice SB Sinha Memorial Lecture, focusing on the landmark case “Kesavananda Bharati vs. State of Kerala.” The event was graced by Hon’ble Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai of the Supreme Court as the chief guest, with Justice Rongon Mukhopadhyay of the Jharkhand High Court paying tribute to Justice SB Sinha.

The program began with a ceremonial lamp lighting, followed by an introduction from NUSRL Vice Chancellor Dr. Ashok R. Patil, who underscored the importance of remembering Justice Sinha’s contributions to Indian jurisprudence.

In his keynote address, Justice Gavai highlighted the significant role Justice SB Sinha played in the development of law in India, particularly during his tenure from 2000 to 2009. He praised Justice Sinha for his dedication and hardworking nature, noting his extensive contribution to legal literature and his active role even after retirement.

Justice Gavai’s lecture centered on the “Kesavananda Bharati vs. State of Kerala” case, which solidified the doctrine of the basic structure of the Constitution, ensuring that its fundamental framework cannot be altered. He discussed other key judicial decisions, including the Indira Gandhi case, which reinforced the need for free and fair elections, and the Menaka Gandhi case, which affirmed the right to travel abroad as a constitutional right. He emphasized that fundamental rights are the essence of the Constitution, necessary for living a dignified life and advancing social and economic development.

Justice Gavai also shared personal anecdotes about his experiences with Justice SB Sinha, portraying him as a role model who consistently encouraged and supported junior judges, inspiring continuous learning within the judiciary.

The event concluded with Assistant Registrar Dr. Jesu Ketan Patnaik delivering the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to Justice Gavai and other distinguished guests. He highlighted the lecture’s success in honoring Justice SB Sinha’s legacy and inspiring the new generation to uphold the rich traditions of the Indian judicial system.
