Amit Shah Announces Border Fencing with Myanmar to Curb Infiltration Threats

Guwahati, EW Correspondent:  Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared on Saturday that India will be implementing a robust fencing strategy along its border with Myanmar to curb the infiltration of unauthorized individuals, echoing the measures already in place along the border with Bangladesh.

Addressing the passing out parade of the first batch of the newly-constituted Assam Police Commando battalions, Shah expressed concerns over the increasing infiltration challenges faced by the nation. He underscored the need to fortify the border with Myanmar to deter infiltrators, similar to the barricading measures adopted along the Bangladesh border.

Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to securing India’s borders and ensuring the safety of its citizens. He highlighted the strategic importance of implementing border control measures with Myanmar, stating that it is essential to protect the nation’s sovereignty and maintain security.

During his address, the Union Home Minister revealed that the Centre is contemplating ending the free-movement facility currently in place with Myanmar. The move is seen as a proactive step to address the growing concerns related to unauthorized crossings and potential security threats.

The decision to fence the border with Myanmar comes as part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s border security infrastructure. The government aims to create a robust defense mechanism to thwart infiltration attempts and safeguard the country’s territorial integrity.

As the nation awaits further details on the implementation of the border fencing initiative, discussions about the potential impact on diplomatic relations and regional dynamics are expected to unfold. The move signals the government’s proactive stance on border security, prioritizing the protection of national interests and ensuring the safety of its citizens in the face of evolving security challenges.
