State-Level “India Fights HIV and STI” Awareness Campaign Launched

Education, Shri Narendra Shivaji Patel inaugurated the state-wide India Fights HIV and STI” awareness campaign at Samanvay Bhavan, Bhopal. During the event, State Minister Narendra Shivaji Patel emphasized the importance of awareness about HIV/AIDS among the youth and the broader community. He highlighted that open discussions and addressing queries are essential for ensuring safe behavior and encouraging timely testing and treatment without hesitation. He stated, A healthy Madhya Pradesh is crucial for a healthy India, and awareness is key to good health. Surbhi Gupta, Director of the Madhya Pradesh State AIDS Control Committee and Secretary of Public Health and Medical Education, informed that there are 206 ICTC centers across the state offering free HIV testing and counseling services. Additionally, 33 ART centers provide free treatment and medication to HIV patients. She noted that last year, around 6,000 HIV cases were reported in Madhya Pradesh, with approximately 1,200 deaths due to AIDS-related illnesses, primarily because of delayed testing and irregular medication. The campaign will focus on raising awareness to address these issues. The campaign, running from August 12 to October 12, 2024, aims to increase HIV/AIDS awareness among the generalpublic, particularly those aged 15 to 49. It will also work to dispel myths and reduce discrimination against those living with HIV. Special activities will be organized in rural areas with the support of the National Health Mission, National AIDS Control Program staff, NGOs, and NSS. Awareness programs will be conducted in schools, colleges, and community centers, with a focus on ten priority districts, including Bhopal, Barwani, Khargone, and others. During the launch event, NSS and Red Ribbon Club members used cultural performances and plays to convey messages about AIDS awareness and precautions. NSS’s Dr. R.K. Vijay and AIIMS Assistant Professor Dr. Sagar educated the youth on HIV/AIDS. The event was attended by Bhopal CMHO Dr. Prabhakar Tiwari, members of the Madhya Pradesh State AIDS Control Committee, Red Ribbon Club, NSS volunteers, social workers, and youth.
