Initiative in Basti: Development of 1,085 Banana tree + Fish Ponds

Lucknow/Basti, EW News: Basti district in Uttar Pradesh has embarked on a unique endeavor aimed at boosting farmers' income through innovative agricultural practices. In a first-of-its-kind initiative under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), Basti district has developed ponds for banana cultivation and fish farming in rural areas. Notably, these ponds have been equipped for both pisciculture and banana plantation, fostering an integrated approach to farming.

The construction of 1085 Banana tree + fish ponds across the entire district marks a significant milestone in rural development efforts. Through this transformative project, rural communities are poised to gain economic security, employment opportunities, and access to new livelihood sources. This pioneering initiative will not only bolster agricultural productivity but also ensure the conservation of natural resources.

District Magistrate Andra Vamsi shared insights into this groundbreaking initiative, emphasizing its potential to uplift the prosperity of Basti district. He revealed that a total of 1085 ponds have been constructed as part of the project, spanning 14 development blocks. Each pond has been meticulously designed to accommodate both banana cultivation and fish farming, with an investment ranging from Rs. 1.28 lakh to Rs. 6 lakh, depending on its size.

This initiative has generated 547,129 person-days of employment opportunities, benefiting a total of 9150 job cardholders under the NREGS. Additionally, 42493 Banana tree saplings have been planted around these ponds, promising a substantial yield shortly. Furthermore, an expected fish production of 9761 kilograms annually from these ponds underscores the potential for economic growth and sustainability.

District authorities, administrative officials, and residents have played pivotal roles in the success of this vital initiative. Their proactive involvement has not only ensured its implementation but also paved the way for inclusive development and environmental conservation. As Basti district continues to forge ahead on the path of progress, this initiative stands as a testament to the government's commitment to rural welfare and sustainable development.
