The Unstoppable Rise from Patna’s Streets to the Corridors of Power

In 1974, Ravindra Kishore Sinha, a young journalist from Patna, Bihar, stepped into a cramped rented office with a dream: to provide livelihoods for ex-servicemen returning from the 1971 Indo-Pak War. Armed with just Rs 250 and a team of two, he founded Security and Intelligence Services (SIS), a venture that would grow into one of Asia-Pacific’s largest security firms. But RK, as he’s affectionately known, didn’t stop there. A founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he rose to become a prominent member of the Rajya Sabha while championing social causes like dowry-free marriages and temple construction. This is the story of a man who turned a small-town vision into a national legacy—a tale of grit, generosity, and glory.

A Seed Planted in Patna

Born on September 22, 1951, in Bihar’s heartland, RK Sinha grew up in a modest, lower-middle-class family. His early years in Patna were shaped by a thirst for knowledge, earning him degrees in Political Science and Law. But it was his stint as a journalist that ignited his fire. Covering crime and politics for local papers, he saw firsthand the struggles of ordinary Indians—especially soldiers returning from war with no jobs. In 1971, as a war correspondent during the Indo-Pak conflict, he witnessed the bravery of servicemen, planting the seed for what would become SIS. His involvement in the JP Movement of 1974-75 further fuelled his resolve, inspiring his book Jan Andolan and cementing his belief in grassroots change.

Building an Empire: The Birth of SIS

With Rs 250 scraped together, RK launched SIS in 1974 from a tiny Patna office. His mission was simple yet bold: employ ex-servicemen and provide security in a country rife with uncertainty. Starting with just two guards, he knocked on doors, convincing businesses to trust his vision. Word spread, and SIS grew—first across Bihar, then India, and eventually abroad with the 2008 acquisition of Australia’s Chubb Security. Today, SIS employs over 2.85 lakh people—prioritizing ex-servicemen even now—serving more than 22,000 customers across 62,000+ locations. In the last financial year, SIS Limited recorded an annual revenue of Rs 12,261 crore cementing its status as a powerhouse. From a modest start, RK built not just a company but a lifeline for lakhs, especially Bihar’s underprivileged.

Elevating Security Education: IISSM

RK’s commitment to security extended beyond employment into professional training, birthing the Indian Institute of Security and Safety Management (IISSM). As its chairman, he envisioned an institution that would formalize and elevate the skills of security personnel across India. Established to bridge the gap between demand and expertise, IISSM offers courses in security management, fire safety, and disaster response, blending practical training with modern techniques. Under his leadership, the institute has become a cornerstone for aspiring professionals, reflecting his belief that a secure nation requires skilled guardians—a natural extension of his SIS legacy.

A Political Powerhouse

RK’s ambitions weren’t confined to boardrooms. A founding member of the BJP from its Jan Sangh days, he blended ideology with action. As Chairman of Bihar’s Election Campaign Committee, he orchestrated victories that reshaped the state’s political landscape. In 2014, his peers elected him to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar, where he emerged as a prominent voice. Yet, RK remained grounded, advocating for Bihar’s development and aligning with RSS and BJP stalwarts. His term, ending in 2020, left a legacy of influence, proving that business success and political clout could coexist.

Sowing Seeds of Sustainability: Adya Organics

RK Sinha’s vision extended beyond security into the fertile fields of organic farming, where he sought to revive ancient Indian traditions. Inspired by his roots in Bihar and a desire to combat the ills of chemical-laden agriculture, he founded Adya Organics, a company dedicated to sustainable, natural foods. Starting with a farm in Dehradun in 2001 to supply pure A2 milk and ghee to a boarding school, Adya grew into a national brand under his guidance, promoting products like organic ghee, honey, and sattu. His advocacy reached rural farmers, notably in his ancestral village of Bahiara, where he introduced organic strawberry cultivation, proving that traditional methods could yield modern profits. For RK, Adya Organics wasn’t just a business—it was a movement to nourish both people and the planet.

Guardian of Faith: The Chitragupta Mandir Legacy

RK Sinha’s devotion to culture and community shines through his deep involvement with the Shree Adi Chitragupta Mandir & Trust in Patna. As a patron of the Chitragupta Mandir, a revered temple dedicated to Lord Chitragupta—the divine scribe of karma—he has spearheaded efforts to preserve and enhance this spiritual landmark. Through the trust, he has funded renovations, organized religious events, and supported community welfare initiatives tied to the temple, reflecting his Kayastha heritage and commitment to faith. For RK, the Chitragupta Temple isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a symbol of unity and service, where he blends his resources and influence to uplift devotees and honour tradition.

Carrying Forward Bihar’s Legacy

RK Sinha’s journey mirrors the towering legacies of Bihar’s luminaries, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan, whose ideals of service and progress resonate in his work. Like Dr. Prasad, India’s first President and a son of Bihar, who championed education and national unity, RK has empowered thousands through The Indian Public School and AWASAR, ensuring underprivileged youth access transformative opportunities. Like Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan, whose JP Movement inspired RK’s own Jan Andolan and activism, he has fought for social justice, uplifting the marginalized with jobs at SIS, sustainable farming through Adya Organics, and dowry-free marriages. Rooted in Bihar’s fertile soil, RK’s initiatives—be it training security professionals at IISSM or fostering community through the Chitragupta Mandir—echo Prasad’s vision of a cohesive India and Narayan’s call for equitable change. By blending tradition with modernity, RK carries their torch, building a self-reliant nation from Patna’s heart to India’s horizons.

Empowering Dreams: Education Through AWASAR and The Indian Public School

Never one to forget his humble beginnings, RK Sinha turned his gaze to education, opening doors for the poorest and brightest alike. He established AWASAR, a charitable trust offering free IIT JEE coaching to underprivileged students, particularly targeting girls and rural youth. Partnered with The Indian Public School in Dehradun, AWASAR provides structured classes, expert faculty, and study materials to level the playing field for those dreaming of engineering excellence. From daily test series to personal mentoring, the initiative has sent students to prestigious institutions, proving talent transcends wealth. But RK’s educational vision didn’t stop there. He founded The Indian Public School (TIPS) in Dehradun, a world-class institution blending academic rigor with holistic development, reflecting his belief that education is the bedrock of progress. For RK, these ventures are bridges from poverty to possibility.

A Heart for Society

Beyond profits and power, RK’s heart beat for social good. Through SIS and personal efforts, he launched skill-training programs for rural youth, organized dowry-free mass marriages, and rebuilt temples to preserve cultural roots. When floods ravaged Bihar, he was among the first to send aid—trucks of food and blankets bearing his quiet generosity. As Chairman of Hindustan Samachar, he promoted journalism with a nationalist lens. In 2023, Mahatma Gandhi Central University honoured him with a doctorate for his contributions to employment, journalism, and social service—a fitting tribute to a life of impact.

A Legacy Unfinished

RK Sinha’s story continues to evolve. SIS thrives, its footprint expanding, while RK remains a well-respected figure in Bihar and beyond. No longer in the Rajya Sabha, he channels his energy into philanthropy and mentoring the next generation. His journey—from a journalist with Rs 250 to a billionaire statesman—embodies the Indian dream. “Security isn’t just about guarding buildings,” he once said, “it’s about safeguarding lives and futures.” In Patna, where it all began, his name echoes as a beacon of hope—a reminder that from humble roots, giants can rise.
