UK government passes UCC to ensure equal rights and justice for all citizens
Dehradun, EW Correspondent, In a historic move, the Uttarakhand government has enacted the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a set of common laws that apply to all citizens regardless of their religion, caste, or gender. The UCC aims to promote equality, justice, and harmony among the diverse communities of the state, by replacing the personal laws that govern matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
The UCC was passed by the state assembly on Tuesday, after a long and heated debate that saw opposition from some parties and groups, who argued that the UCC would violate the constitutional right to freedom of religion and undermine the cultural diversity of the state. However, the ruling party and its allies defended the UCC as a progressive and secular reform that would empower women, protect minorities, and prevent communal conflicts.
The UCC has been hailed as a landmark precedent by many legal experts, social activists, and civil society organizations, who have been advocating for a uniform civil code at the national level for decades. They have praised the Uttarakhand government for taking a bold and visionary step towards realizing the constitutional directive of Article 44, which states that “The State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India.”
The UCC has also received a positive response from the people of Uttarakhand, who have welcomed the change as a sign of modernity and development. Many have expressed their hope that the UCC will foster a sense of unity and brotherhood among the different faiths and cultures of the state, and pave the way for a more peaceful and prosperous future.
