‘With no baggage, Indians might do extraordinarilywell’

0

They will have the benefit of being allowed a lot of follies to be committed because they will be playing a Test after a long time, says W.V. Raman.

Mumbai: As head coach of the Indian women’s team over the last couple of years, W.V. Raman enjoyed success guiding the side to the final of the T20 World Cup in 2020.Last week, he was replaced by Ramesh Powar. Being a seasoned coach, Raman has moved on. However, he is always ready to talk about cricket.

In a chat with Sport-star, Raman talks about the road ahead for the Indian women’s team and what they should keep in mind ahead of the tour of England and Australia. Excerpts:
India will be playing a Test after seven years. Do you think that this is the right time for this team to venture into the longer format again?

There is no such thing as the right timing or whatever. When the girls are doing well and there is a lot of interest being generated, I think perhaps the administration feels that it is the right time to try and engage them in the Test format. As far as the girls are concerned, it is a case of opportunity for them to try and gaugetheir skills, test themselves and prove themselves about how good they are in this format as well.

What are the challenges that the players will face?

They will have the benefit of being allowed a lot of follies to be committed because they are playing after a long time. They will have that cushion because people will understand that it is not going to be easy for them to play Test cricket after seven years and that too, an away game, especially in England, where the ball can perhaps seam. I am not saying that they will not do well, but if in the event, they can’t do as well as expected, they will always have that leeway.

How do you see the fact that a lot of players will be playing red-ball cricket for the first time, that too, without practice games?
That’s a good thing. They will not have any baggage in their heads, they might probably go out and do extraordinarily well. Everything is a matter of perception. The thing is, it’s like the case of a bumble bee being told that it can’t fly because aerodynamically, it’s not built to fly. But it flies because nobody has told it that you can’t fly. Similarly, we do not have to tell too many things to the players who are young and have not played in a Test.

Ahead of the England tour, if you are asked for one suggestion, what will that be?

The most important thing is that they should live in the present. What is happening is some thing that will happen then. Gathering and talking to people who have played in England in the past is one thing, but going meticulously about what is told to them by people who have played this format, may also not be a great way to go about things.
They have to go out and find out things for themselves. After the England series, the Indian team will play a pink-ball Test against Australia. In a format where even the men’s team has struggled, will it be too big a challenge for the women?

Look, it’s like damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Let them have some experience. Why are we even taking it for granted that the girls will also find it difficult or they will have a bad game? Let’s see how it pans out. Let them gain the experience, let them play and then only we can talk about it. Why are we even thinking of repairing something

when it is not even need-
ed. Let it all happen.

Trivendra Rawat resigns as CM, three frontrunners in the race to replace him

New Delhi: A major political turnaround took place in Uttarakhand on Tuesday as Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat tendered his resignation. He submitted his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya after reaching Raj Bhavan, a day after the meeting party
president J P Nadda in Delhi. Addressing a press conference after tendering his resignation, the 60-year-old leader thanked the
BJP for letting him serve the “dev bhoomi” of Uttarakhand for four years. The party gave me a golden opportunity to serve this State for four years. I had never thought that I would get such an opportunity. The party has now decided that the opportunity to serve as CM should be given to someone else now,” he said. Rawat added that the party legislators will hold a meeting at 10 am on Wednesday, following which the name of the new chief minister may be announced.Rumours are rife that first-time MLA Dhan Singh Rawat may replace Trivendra Rawat.

Ajay Bhatt and Anil Baluni, two senior leaders from the state who are members of Parliament, are also being seen as two other strong probables for the top post.Sources said the party may also bring in a deputy chief minister, who will be from the Kumaon region.Pushkar Singh Dhami is likely to be the deputy chief minister, they added.A section of state leaders are re-
portedly miffed with Rawat’s leadership and are of the view that the party’s electoral prospects under him may not be very bright.Rawat has been accused of indecision and many in the party believe that this may go against the BJP’s ambitions as the states goes to polls next year.

Reacting to the recent developments, Former Uttarakhand CM and Congress leader Harish Rawat “I can see a change in power happening. Even the BJP’s central leadership has admitted that its present govt in the State could not do much. No matter who they bring now they will not come back.

Iran slips record volume of oil into China, taps Asian clients

0

Iran moved about 17.8 million tonnes of crude into China during the past 14 months, with volumes reaching record levels in January and February, while India’s state refiners have added Iranian oil to their annual import plans on the assumption that
U.S. sanctions on the supplier will soon ease, according to industry sources and Refinitiv data.

U.S. President Joe Biden has sought to revive talks with Iran on a nuclear deal abandoned by former President Donald Trump in
2018, although harsh economic measures remain in place. The sanctions caused a drop in Iran’s exports to China, India, Japan and South Korea. Those measures, and output cuts by fellow OPEC+ producers, have led to tight supplies of West Asian sour
crude in Asia. “They talked to us. They said: ‘very soon [we] hope to resume oil supplies’,” said a source at an Indian refiner. Restored Iranian supplies to India could lower demand for spot cargoes, which has risen recently after Iraq cut
supplies and Kuwait reduced the duration of some contracts. India, hurting from the sustained recovery in prices, expects Iran-
ian supplies to return to the market in 3-4 months, a government official said.Another Indian refiner said NIOC officials had told them a formal pact on supply would be signed after Iran’s elections in June.

OTTs don’t pose a threat: Bijli

0

Even as it is coming out of a challenging year due to the pandemic, multiplex giant PVR plans to add more than 30 new screens in the coming fiscal, marking its entry into newer cities such as Thiruvanan-thapuram, Bhubaneswar and Patna, said joint MD Sanjeev Kumar Bijli.Mr. Bijli said he expected to go back to FY20 growth levels in the coming year.“The line-up of films is very strong — English, Hindi and regional… I do imagine that with the curve flattening, and the vaccinations going up, people will get more confidence to come and watch new films at the cinemas.so if not Q1, I would say we would be looking at bouncing back at least by Q2,” he added.“Last year was very, very challenging. A lot of businesses, especiall yours, got badly hit because we were the first ones to shut down and the last ones to open in October and that too with capacity restrictions, which have now been lifted in a majority of the States,” Mr. Bijli said. “However, now we’ve got a great line-up of films starting from March 11, so it’s looking very promising, of course, hoping that the numbers don’t go up as far as COVID cases are concerned,” he added.

On competition from OTT platforms on which some films were released during the pandemic, he said those times ‘were over’. “Movies were sold to OTT because producers didn’t have an option as cinemas were shut… But now you see a lot of ex-
citement [from] producers, actors and the whole community to release their films on the big screen,” he added.
