NETAP sees 35 pc surge in apprentice hiring

0

Kolkata, National Employability through Apprenticeship Program [NETAP], India’s largest degree apprenticeship program from TeamLease Skills University, India’s first vocational skills university, has indicated that overall intake of apprentices across India Inc. has seen a significant surge amidst the COVID 19 pandemic.

In FY20-21 hiring has increased by 35%. In fact from April 2021 to now, hiring continues to spike by approximately 40%, especially across key sectors like healthcare & pharmaceuticals, ITeS, BFSI, e-Commerce amongst others. Not only this, even the average stipend pay-out per apprentice has improved by 18% over the years. NETAP has disbursed INR 2700 crores worth stipends since 2014.

Sharing his views on the trajectory of the NETAP program, Sumit Kumar, Vice President – NETAP, TeamLease Skills University, said, “At TeamLease very early in our journey we realised that in India, lack of job opportunities was not a major problem, instead the dearth of skilled talent was.

One of the most effective method to address this issue is apprenticeships. Traditionally both the perception and acceptance for this model was not very high. Today with our conscious efforts, by linking apprenticeship with higher education and offering degree apprenticeships, we have been able to move the needle. Not only have candidates become more forthcoming towards apprenticeships but even companies have consciously increased their apprentice hiring as they have realised the merits of this model to build a robust talent pipeline for the future.”

The apprenticeship route has also enabled aspiring candidates to pave their way into formal employment. Today 95% of the certified apprentices are in formal employment. 40% of these apprentices are being absorbed by the same employers where the candidates had done their apprenticeships. “Not only this, a majority of these apprentices are now earning an average 45% premium on their wages, as they have advanced their skill expertise through the apprenticeship route”, added Kumar.

“NETAP has been a pioneer on the front of taking apprenticeships to the masses. In fact, we were the first to roll out a degree apprenticeship program much before the recent education reforms were formulated. We have completed enrolments of close to 2.5 lakh apprentices since our inception and certified close to 1.25 lakh+ apprentices. However, we have not even touched the tip of the iceberg and there is still a lot of untapped potential on this front. India’s vision is to reach 10 million apprentices in the next 10 years and it is crucial that we scale up our efforts to achieve this goal”, added Kumar.

Through NETAP, even the services sectors such as BFSI (Insurance, Fintech and NBFC), E-commerce, ITeS, Aviation and Agriculture, among others have now extensively leaned towards hiring apprentices. In fact overall apprentices hiring in these sectors has gone up by approximately 40% over the last year. Incidentally the pandemic induced shutdowns have also pushed for increase in apprenticeship deployment in Tier II and Tier III locations.

Sharing her views, Neeti Sharma, Management Representative of TLSU and CoFounder of TL Edtech, said, “Today, it is crucial to create a strong industry academia connect to improve the learning ecosystem. Apprenticeship is a very conducive mechanism to achieve this. On one hand this will provide universities with the opportunity to improve the employability of their students and on the other hand it will also enable employers to connect with the right talent and create a strong talent pool for the industry.”

Having started with a partnership with 20 employers in 2014, today NETAP is partnered with 500 employers across all sectors and caters to about 140 varied job roles. The program is deployed over 3500 locations across all states pan India and plans to expand to new pin codes in the next three years.

Farmers affected by lockdown receiving financial assistance

0

Ambassa(Tripura), Hundreds of farmers like Anu Mia, Ramadhar Pashi, Laxman Pashi and Achir Mia having their fields outside the barbed wire border fencing ultimately heaved a great sigh of relief as some sort of financial assistance started to flow into their bank accounts to redress their loss as they could not harvest their crops during lock down 1 due to closure of border gates.
During the lock down, in order to combat the first wave of COVID pandemic in 2020, the Union government imposed complete closure on Indo-Bangla border. As a result, the farmers lost their access to their lands outside the barbed wire border fencing. One such farmer Anu Mia said, “The period was to harvest ripe crop. But as the border was closed we couldn’t harvest. And our ripe Boro paddy was looted by Bangladeshi goons in broad daylight in front of our eyes. Rest was destroyed by monsoon flood”.

Other farmers also admitted the fact and informed that in total 141 farmers were affected at that time. Those 141 families have only these patches of land outside the barbed wire fencing and naturally the impact crushed them heavily. Laxman Pashi said, “We were in complete hopelessness. Then Kisan Morcha (BJKM) Mandal President came forward. He arranged for a visit of the affected site with Minister Manoj Kanti Deb and high officials from Agriculture Department as well as BJKM Tripura President Jawahar Saha”. After that visit Pintu communicated the whole saga in writing to the concerned Minister, Tripura Chief Minister and Union Minister for Agriculture. As a result a sum of 8,74,400 rupees was sanctioned recently to compensate the 141 farmers on the basis of their quantity of land.
And the amount started to be disbursed in the respective bank accounts.
The smile on the faces of the peasantry unveiled the reward of the initiative of BJKM, according to the local people.

No compromise on Article 370; congratulated PM for talks with Pak: Mehbooba

0

New Delhi, Reiterating that there will be no compromise on Article 370, former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said that the people of J&K will fight for the restoration of the special status of the erstwhile state even if takes years.

Ms Mehbooba said that she made these remarks during the all-party meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The former chief minister said that she congratulated the PM that they talked to Pakistan which led to a ceasefire and less infiltration.

“The meeting between J&K leaders and the PM took place in conducive atmosphere… I informed him about the issues confronted by the people of J&K. People of J&K are in a lot of difficulties after August 5, 2019. They’re angry, upset and emotionally shattered. They feel humiliated… I told the PM that people of J&K don’t accept the manner in which Article 370 was abrogated on August 5, 2019 unconstitutionally, illegally and immorally,” Ms Mehbooba told reporters here after attending the All Party Meeting.

“Like BJP struggled for 70 years to abrogate Article 370, illegally and unconstitutionally, the people of J&K will struggle constitutionally, democratically, peacefully for the restoration of the special status of J&K. Be it months or years, we’ll restore Article 370 in J&K as it’s a matter of our identity,” she said.

Ms Mehbooba said the special status of J&K was not given by Pakistan, but by our country, by Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel. “This Act defines the identity of the people and safeguards our land and our jobs. So there will be no compromise on this issue,” she said.

The former chief minister said that she congratulated the PM that they talked to Pakistan which led to ceasefire and less infiltration. “I told him (the PM) that the Centre is holding talks with China. Similarly, for peace of J&K if they’ve to talk to Pakistan again, they should do that,” she said.

Ms Mehbooba said that she told the PM that the Centre should also talk to Pakistan about trade with the neighbouring country along the Line of Control (LoC) that has halted. “Be it from Uri- Muzaffarabad or though Jammu, it’s a source of employment for many people,” she said.

The former chief minister said that the harassment of people, including journalists, for speaking their minds should be stopped immediately. “UAPA is imposed on anyone who speaks his mind… everyone is harassed… it has to stop. Political detainees should be released immediately,” she said.

Ms Mehbooba said that she also demanded that the land, jobs, and minerals of J&K should be protected. “People who have suffered due post-August 5, 2019 should be compensated. I particularly informed the PM that the people are suffering in J&K,” she added.

Prime Minister Modi chaired a meeting of 14 leaders from eight political parties in J&K on Thursday to discuss the future course of action for the Union Territory. This was the first such initiative by the Centre since the abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile state of J&K on August 5, 2019.

The Centre had invited four former chief ministers – Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mehbooba Mufti, besides four Deputy Chief Ministers – Muzafar Hussain Beigh, Tara Chand, Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta. Leaders of six other political parties — Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami of CPI(M), Sajad Gani Lone of Peoples Conference, Mohammad Altaf Bukhari of Apni Party, Prof Bhim Singh of Panthers Party, Ravinder Raina of BJP and G A Mir of Congress – were also invited in the meeting.
