COVID curfew extended till May 31 in J&K

0

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday extended the COVID curfew, which was suppose to end on May 23, by another week till May 31 in all 20 districts of the Union Territory amid no letup in the number of fresh coronavirus cases and deaths. An official said COVID curfew imposed in all 20 districts of J&K till 0700 hrs on May 24 has been extended further till 0700 hrs on May 31. ‘Curfew will be strict except for a few essential services,’ he said, adding Deputy Commissioners have been given limited flexibility to ensure economic activities do not suffer.

This is the fourth successive extension of COVID curfew in the valley since April 29. The extension has come in the backdrop of no letup in the number of COVID-19 cases in J&K, particularly the summer capital, Srinagar, which has recorded the major chunk of positive cases during the last over a month. As many as 3848 people, including 2406 from Kashmir and 1441 from Jammu, tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday in the UT, where 43 people lost their lives due to the infection. Srinagar recorded the highest number of 598 positive cases on Friday, followed by Jammu with 401 cases. Barring Shopian, all the districts in Kashmir division had positive cases in three digits.

However, ignoring personal safety, besides appeals by ulmas and religious scholars to adhere to COVID curfew imposed to break the chain, people are still
hitting the streets in the valley, where thousands of violators have been fined and arrested while hundreds of vehicles have been seized since April 29.

On April 29, the  Jammu and Kashmir administration imposed curfew in 11 districts to curtail the spread of COVID-19, which was subsequently extended to
all the 20 districts in the Union Territory the next day. The curfew that was supposed to end on May 3 was extended in Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla and Jammu till May 6. However, the Deputy Commissioners of the remaining seven districts in the valley extended the lockdown till May 6 separately. The COVID curfew was later extended till May 10 and then till May 17. The lockdown was again extended till May 31 on Saturday by the administration.

The administration last month ordered the closure of all universities, colleges, schools, and coaching centres in the Union Territory till May 15 though teaching and non-teaching staff was asked to attend schools and colleges. But, the J&K administration later allowed teaching and non-teaching staff to stay home in view of a surge in COVID-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir. The closure of the educational institutes was later extended till May 30.

Teachers, however, are conducting online classes from home in the valley though many students alleged that they were unable to attend these classes due to non-availability of smart phones.

She also posted a  video of DDC members  on her twitter handle in  which they were heard  saying they remained  confined in a hotel for the  past seven months. We  cannot meet our family  members and those who  have elected us, they  said adding they have  decided to resign if they  were not allowed to meet  their people. An official statement  issued Saturday evening  said DDC chairman,  DDC, Budgam and other  DDC members today  called on Khan and raised  several issues of public  importance for redressal.

‘With no baggage, Indians might do extraordinarilywell’

They will have the benefit of being allowed a lot of follies to be committed because they will be playing a Test after a long time, says W.V. Raman.

Mumbai: As head coach of the Indian women’s team over the last couple of years, W.V. Raman enjoyed success guiding the side to the final of the T20 World Cup in 2020.Last week, he was replaced by Ramesh Powar. Being a seasoned coach, Raman has moved on. However, he is always ready to talk about cricket.

In a chat with Sport-star, Raman talks about the road ahead for the Indian women’s team and what they should keep in mind ahead of the tour of England and Australia. Excerpts:
India will be playing a Test after seven years. Do you think that this is the right time for this team to venture into the longer format again?

There is no such thing as the right timing or whatever. When the girls are doing well and there is a lot of interest being generated, I think perhaps the administration feels that it is the right time to try and engage them in the Test format. As far as the girls are concerned, it is a case of opportunity for them to try and gaugetheir skills, test themselves and prove themselves about how good they are in this format as well.

What are the challenges that the players will face?

They will have the benefit of being allowed a lot of follies to be committed because they are playing after a long time. They will have that cushion because people will understand that it is not going to be easy for them to play Test cricket after seven years and that too, an away game, especially in England, where the ball can perhaps seam. I am not saying that they will not do well, but if in the event, they can’t do as well as expected, they will always have that leeway.

How do you see the fact that a lot of players will be playing red-ball cricket for the first time, that too, without practice games?
That’s a good thing. They will not have any baggage in their heads, they might probably go out and do extraordinarily well. Everything is a matter of perception. The thing is, it’s like the case of a bumble bee being told that it can’t fly because aerodynamically, it’s not built to fly. But it flies because nobody has told it that you can’t fly. Similarly, we do not have to tell too many things to the players who are young and have not played in a Test.

Ahead of the England tour, if you are asked for one suggestion, what will that be?

The most important thing is that they should live in the present. What is happening is some thing that will happen then. Gathering and talking to people who have played in England in the past is one thing, but going meticulously about what is told to them by people who have played this format, may also not be a great way to go about things.
They have to go out and find out things for themselves. After the England series, the Indian team will play a pink-ball Test against Australia. In a format where even the men’s team has struggled, will it be too big a challenge for the women?

Look, it’s like damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Let them have some experience. Why are we even taking it for granted that the girls will also find it difficult or they will have a bad game? Let’s see how it pans out. Let them gain the experience, let them play and then only we can talk about it. Why are we even thinking of repairing something

when it is not even need-
ed. Let it all happen.
